SHARE is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of New Jersey dedicated to educating girls in Africa by creating reading programs, building libraries, and renovating schools. SHARE:

  • An acronym for: SHannon’s After-school Reading Exchange.

SHARE’s motto:

  • "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader"

Mission:

  • To empower girls in Africa though education

Founder:

  • Shannon McNamara (then 15 years old)

Locations:

  • SHARE branches are located in Tanzania, Africa. Specifically, in the Bukoba Municipal, located in the Kagera region of north-western Tanzania, East Africa
  • SHARE is headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, USA

4 School Libraries have been created:

  • Kiteyagwa Primary School, Kagondo village
  • Kagemu Secondary School, Kitendaguro village
  • Kangabusharo Primary School, Kangabusharo village
  • Hekima Girls' Secondary School, Bukoba
  • 8000 students and teachers in 11 Africa schools utilize books donated by SHARE
  • 610 girls are in SHARE after-school reading programs, ages 10-18
  • Many SHARE programs operate several days after school and on Saturday mornings
  • Students are taught English language reading, writing, and speaking
  • SHARE employs teachers to instruct the girls
  • SHARE also equips a school library in Zanzibar
  • 900+ New Jersey students have volunteered for SHARE since July 2008
  • 33,000 donated children’s books and thousands of school supplies have been donated to libraries in Africa
  • $200,000 has been raised in fundraising efforts to date

The McNamara family has done field work for SHARE in Tanzania three times (2008, 2009, 2010) and plans to return again in July 2011.For more information, please contact:
