Promoting Youth Involvement

One of SHARE's missions it to promote youth involvement and empower teenagers to use their skills, talents, creativity and energy in such ways that they develop both the pleasure and the habit of giving back and making a positive difference in the lives of others. SHARE's founder, Shannon, has spoken to over 20 audiences within the United States and Tanzania, empowering and challenging listeners to take action. United Nations Foundation "Girl Up" Pep Rally, Washington, DC -2011

SHARE founder, Shannon, spread awareness for what life is like for African girls at the Girl Up Pep Rally in Washington, DC on January 15, 2011.  Girls from acorss the Washington, DC area, through their schools and nonprofit organizations, attended the event to learn about girls in the developing world.  The purpose of the Pep Rally was to educate youth and encourage them to take action in support of their counterparts overseas. 

United Nations Foundation "Girl Up" Reception, New York -2010

Thanks to the United Nations Foundation for inviting SHARE founder Shannon McNamara to speak at the Girl Up Reception held at the MTV Lodge in Manhattan on October 1, 2010.  The event focused on introducing the audience to the campaign and encouraging people to get involved.  Shannon appreciated the opportunity to raise awareness for girls' education in East Africa and mentioned how SHARE's mission and the Girl Up mission are nearly identical.  Both focus on empowering girls in the developing world.  Shannon is honored to be serving on the Girl Up Advisory Board.

Prudential Spirit of the Community Award, Washington, DC - 2010

In Washington, DC at the 4-day Prudential Spirit of Community Youth Award Conference, Shannon was invited to speak to the press about the importance of youth volunteering. 

Girl Scout Troops, Ridgewood, New Jersey

SHARE founder, Shannon McNamara, spoke to several Girl Scout Troops at the Ridgewood Public Library, in Ridgewood, New Jersey on January 29, 2011.  The scouts first watched the film, "A Small Act" and then listened to Shannon speak about SHARE and what life is like for girls their age in the villages where SHARE operates.  The scouts donated hundreds of school supplies to support SHARE programs in Africa.

SHARE was a feature on the KIDS ARE HEROES Radio program, on Recognition Radio, WBTN Vermont, 1370, on January 29, 2011.  Shannon explained what life is like for the SHARE girls, fielded questions, and encouraged kids to get involved in community service.

United Nations Youth Assembly Conference, New York - 2010

SHARE founder Shannon McNamara promoted youth involvement to 600 youth delegates from around the world at the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation's Seventh Annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.  The 3-day conference, titled "Tomorrow's Leaders Today," was held August 4th-6th, 2010. 

Shannon spread awareness of SHARE's efforts in supporting the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with particular interest in Goal #3, "to promote gender equality and empower women". 

AllyKatzz Tween Summit, New York, October 2010

SHARE particpated in the 2nd annual AllyKatzz Summit on October 10, 2010 in New York City.  Shannon spoke with tween-teen girls in "speed-meeting" style at threee diffferent sessions.  The attendees learned about SHARE and then created inspirtional bookmarks for the SHARE girls in Africa.  View press release

SHARE has been actively involved in promoting youth involvement through Prudential's Spirit of Community Awards Program.  SHARE founder, Shannon McNamara, has appreared in Public Service Announcements on television, radio and print for the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service.  The program's goal is to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and even more importantly, to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to the well-being of their communities.  Over the past 15 years, more than 280,000 young Americans have participated in the program.
