Opened in July 2008, this is SHARE’s inaugural program.

The Kiteyagwa Primary school donated a dilapidated classroom to house the program. SHARE renovated the room and turned it into a library for the school. Today 37 SHARE girls, ages 10-13, attend programs during the week and on Saturdays.

Miss Justina Rwebogora, headmistress of the school and SHARE coordinator, is very pleased with the results of the SHARE program and noticed measureable improvement in the girls’ progress. “This year 6 SHARE girls did well on the National Primary Leaving Examination,” noted Miss Justina.

Miss Justina is working on empowering the girls through literacy. “To help the SHARE girls, I have been dealing with pronunciation dialogues, dramatizing as well as giving them English exercises according to their age.”

The Kiteyagwa Primary school is similar to many rural schools in East Africa. The Tanzanian Government spends approximately $1-2 per student per year. As a result, classes are conducted in the most primitive conditions – no power, lighting, plumbing, or modern conveniences of any kind. On a hill, away from the school are the “restrooms” – holes in the ground.  Students sit 3 to 5 to a desk. There is usually just one textbook per class.

The girls at Kiteyagwa Primary School created an original song and dance to thank Shannon and celebrate her return to their school in the summer of 2009.

Before SHARE there were no other books, and there was no school library. These children can count on one hand how many times they have held a book. Many have never seen their name in print. Pencils are in such scarce supply that they break them into 3 pieces to share. There is no in-school cafeteria. In fact, the students do not eat the entire time they are in school.
