The following information has been provided by the Headmistress of the Hekima Girls' Secondary School: The Hekima Girls' Secondary School is a private boarding school founded in 1988 by the Theresian Sisters. In 2009, the school's enrollment was 463 students, in Forms 1-6. Hekima, an all-girls' boarding secondary boarding school, has always tried hard to provide necessary services and supplies, both social and academic, to students.
The Problem: Unhygienic dining place for students.
When the school was opened it had a very small food barn which had been originally planned to store food for about 160 primary school pupils. Together with the extended enrollment, students continue to use the tiny barn as both their eating place and food storage. When taking their meals some students sit on the cereal sacks, others eat while standing inside among the sacks, but most eat standing or sitting outside. During the dry season usually it is windy, hot and dusty outside. During the rainy season it is all wet, cold, and slippery. Iin any case, the way the students take their meals is highly unhygienic and therefore dangerous to their health.
The Solution: A new spacious dining hall
Erect a new building beside the current food barn, and renovate and transform the current food barn. The two structures will be joined by a roomed gang-way to cater for students' scullery and storage of their plates. This new structure will act as a multifunctional hall, as it will be the largest building on the campus, and will be used for recreation and community gathering purposes as well.
The Goal:
The goal of the project is to solve the problem of unhealthy eating place for students so that they are all accommodated inside the eating place at once, eat in comfort and reduce risks of possible diseases culminating from unclean ways of taking meals. This would take us a long way towards fully and effectively transforming Hekima Secondary School from a 4-year to a 6-year "A"-Level girls secondary school so that it can lead the way in both the academic and personal development of young women and also reducing illiteracy for our children thus enabling them to contribute effectively to the development of our dear nation.
