Pen Pal Program

Pen Pal Program

For many years SHARE hosted a thriving Pen Pal Letter Program. (Please note that the SHARE Pen Pal Program has ended.) SHARE girls at the Kagema School in Tanzania initiated the program by writing 33 letters, in English, introducing themselves and their country to teenage SHARE volunteers in New Jersey. After that, there were numerous exchanges back and forth between the SHARE girls in Africa and the SHARE volunteers in North America. Approximately 70 teenagers participated in the program, which ended as the students graduated from high school.

In an effort to enhance this cross cultural exchange, SHARE's media director Brendan McNamara filmed the African girls giving shout-outs to their pen pals in America. A few months later the American teenagers viewed the footage and then returned the favor with Brendan recording their reply messages to be sent back across the globe. SHARE Tanzania coordinator, Tabitha Ephraim, and SHARE board member, Barbara Barkley, were the adults supervising this successful program.
